Has it been a bit since I blogged? Ok well yes but I was mostly blogging on Instagram, not an easy feat with a character limit. But I’m back with excitement as I’ve just finally got the DIY Big Batch Playdough Recipe down. Now this makes a good amount for all those colors you want when dividing the gigantic dough ball. I like to color each one differently and I’m ok with colors being mixed because it’s so quick and easy to make that I’ll usually make it once they need to be refreshed although this will last about 6 months.
If you’re looking to make a big batch too here’s our method…
Makes 8 balls of playdough!
-5 cups of all purpose flour
-1&1/3 cup of Salt
-4 Tablespoons Cream Of Tartar
-4 Tablespoons Coconut Oil (or Vegetable Oil)
-2 cups Boiling Water
-Optional*Food coloring (start with a few drops in the middle and knees dough, keep adding drops and kneeding the dough until you get the color you want)
-To start Boil Water
-Then Mix dry ingredients together in a big mixing bowl, then add Oil.
-Add Boiling Water 1 cup at a time and mix until you get the desired texture (if mixture is too sticky you can add extra flour in 1/3 cup at a time until not sticky anymore)
-Cool dough then kneed. (Optional dough cutter) Cut dough into 8 even sections and roll into balls. If using food coloring dye each dough ball.
-Play
-Store in air tight container. Lasts about 6 months.
And that’s it pretty easy huh and doesn’t take a big part of your day to make. Plus it’s all natural ingredients so if you’ve got a baby like my youngest who just has to take a taste they’ll be safe and probably spit it out because boy is it salty. You can use essential oils (look for food grade so it’s edible) and cocoa powder to make it smell nice but I try not to tempt my baby to sample it further.
And once you’re done put together a Playdough Tool Kit! I love finding things around the yard or house and filling a basket. You can get as fancy or as laid back as you want! My daughter just lets her imagination run wild and its a really hands on sensory activity that’s open ended play which we love! Charlotte Manson/ Waldorf fans anyone?!
Here are a few Tool Kit Ideas:
– Cookie Cutters
-Pom Poms
-Rolling Pins
-Stamps
-Rocks
-Twigs
-Flower Pedals
-Popsicle sticks
-Bingo Chips
– Paper Straws
-Pipe Cleaners
– Safety Scissors or Playdough Scissors
-Googly Eyes
It’s up to you the play is endless and it’s great for morning basket time or when you’re doing a read aloud. If you’re not homeschooling it’s awesome for that witching hour when you need to make dinner and everyone needs your attention at that moment.
